When you think of Lavallette real estate agents, you may assume all agents are equal. This is not necessarily true. Obtaining additional designations and certifications is not necessary to be a real estate agent. However, if an agent does have some letters following their name, it’s an indication that they have taken extra steps to gain more education in a specific area. We feel it can be advantageous if you fall into a specific real estate category, to search for an agent that has a designation or a certification in that area. While all Lavallette real estate agents obviously have the same base level of education, there are other agents, like those in the Birchler Group offices, who go above and beyond what is minimally required. Any professional that takes additional steps to better themselves and their ability to perform their job is a positive sign in our book.
There are many different designations and certifications, we’ll only cover a handful here. First, we will cover the difference between the two categories. Then we’ll list a few examples of each. We hope this information helps you on your real estate journey.
What is the Difference Between Designations and Certifications
Both designations and certifications require a realtor to be a member of the National Association of Realtors. Being a member of this organization gives agents access to many benefits that assist them in becoming better realtors. It provides many resources and educational opportunities for real estate agents to increase their success and maximize their income. Designations are credentials given to realtors who have completed certain courses, have specific experience, and pay annual dues. Certifications are very similar except do not require an agent to pay annual dues. Let’s take a look at some examples.
Designations
Accredited Land Consultants – ALC
This is a very prestigious designation. It requires the holder to follow a reputable Code of Conduct. It also calls for the completion of the LANDU education program. This program is the ultimate in land real estate education. Real estate agents that complete these courses will have the most knowledge of any land real estate agent out there. If you are looking to purchase land, you may want to consider dealing with a realtor with an ALC designation.
General Accredited Appraiser – GAA
Having a GAA indicates that this state general appraiser has completed education and experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications needed to be a general appraiser. If you need an appraiser, you can be confident in a GAA. You know that they are committed to doing the best work they can for you. They have taken extra steps to ensure this happens.
Graduate REALTOR® Institute – GRI
As stated on the National Association of REALTORS® website ”REALTORS® with the Graduate REALTOR® Institute designation have in-depth training in legal and regulatory issues, technology, professional standards, and the sales process. Earning the designation is a way to stand out to prospective buyers and sellers as a professional with expertise in these areas.” There are a number of realtors in the Birchler Realtors family of agents who hold this designation. This is yet another great example of agents taking an extra step to better themselves as agents in order to do a better job for their clients.
The Society of Industrial and Office REALTORS® – SIOR
This designation is given to only the most determined and experienced commercial real estate brokers. These are true specialists in the field of commercial real estate. Within this designation, there are six specialties that agents can focus in.
Certifications

The education required for this certification details the best way to assist current and past military service. This help could be helping them find and use any available assistance. It may also be finding them the most appropriate home for them and their family. Agents who hold this certification take great pride in this.
Pricing Strategy Advisor – PSA
This certification gives real estate agents the information necessary to comfortably clear up any questions or concerns their clients have regarding the pricing and valuation process. It gives agents extra knowledge and boosts their abilities to price properties and create comparative market analysis. When an agent is able to confidently answer all a clients questions regarding the value of a home, it increases the level of trust in the relationship.
The Short Sale & Foreclosure Resource® – SFR
